Types of Motorhomes
We offer insurance coverage for a wide variety of motorhomes, including Florida motorhomes, Hymer motorhomes, and park homes. The term ‘motorhome’ encompasses several vehicle types, which are generally classified into three main categories:
Class A Motorhomes (Integrated):
Class A motorhomes are the largest and most luxurious of all motorhomes or RVs. They typically feature full kitchen and bathroom amenities, extendable awnings, entertainment systems, and ample storage space. These motorhomes are ideal for seasoned travellers who spend extended periods on the road, both within the UK and internationally. Due to their high-end features, insurance for Class A motorhomes tends to be on the pricier side.
Class B Motorhomes (Semi-Integrated):
Class B motorhomes are more compact than their Class A counterparts and generally offer a more basic setup. They are usually built on a standard van chassis, with a smaller driving compartment at the front and a higher ceiling in the rear to allow for standing. These motorhomes often come with modest shower and kitchen areas, along with a living space that doubles as a sleeping area.
Class C Motorhomes (Alcove):
Also known as ‘coach-built’ motorhomes, Class C vehicles have a caravan-style body mounted on a van chassis. They typically include an over-cab double berth that comfortably sleeps two. Falling between Class A and Class B, Class C motorhomes offer a balance of luxury and affordability. They provide more comfort than smaller models while being more budget-friendly and easier to handle than the larger, US-style Class A RVs.
What Are the Different Types of Motorhomes?
The term ‘motorhome’ covers a variety of vehicles that differ in size, features, and price. Some common types include campervans, low-profile models, micro motorhomes, American-style RVs, coachbuilt or overcab motorhomes, and van conversions.
The cost of insuring your motorhome can vary significantly based on several factors, such as the features you select and the level of coverage you require. As with all motor vehicles, it is legally required to have at least Third Party Only (TPO) insurance. You can also opt for higher levels of coverage, such as Third Party, Fire, and Theft (TPFT) or fully comprehensive insurance.
How Much Does Motorhome Insurance Cost?
The cost of motorhome insurance can differ significantly depending on the vehicle. In the UK, the average cost is approximately £350 per year. However, this amount varies based on the type of policy you choose, the features included, and the specific style of your motorhome.
You have the flexibility to opt for a basic policy or one with more extensive coverage, but it’s important to think about all potential situations to ensure you have the best protection possible.
What Affects the Cost of Motorhome Insurance?
Several factors can influence the cost of your motorhome insurance, including:
- High Value: Motorhomes are typically expensive vehicles, which can result in higher insurance premiums.
- Increased Risk: Due to their size and reduced manoeuvrability, motorhomes carry a greater risk of damage or accidents.
- Usage Patterns: Motorhomes are often used for long trips and seasonal travel, which can elevate the likelihood of filing claims.
